I love Heroes day, not just because it’s the beginning of spring in Zimbabwe or it’s a heroes public holiday, but because it gives me a chance to reflect. My babamukuru went missing in the Chimerenga War and never met his mother again. I can’t even fathom what that was like for my grandmother.
It’s also the month I graduated and the season I was born. I get to be so thankful that I can be here with her, and not only be here but also take the entire day off to just be with her, far from the madding crowd – in Goromonzi. Its rather unfortunate I couldn’t be at the national shrine, the heroes acre to celebrate heroes day but our freedom as a country, and MY freedom within my own life, is an amazing thing.
Deep down in Goromonzi enjoying Zimbabwe Heroes Day, I met a serial entrepreneur. David (Not his real name) is from Rusape originally, and he tells the story of moving to Goromonzi. He talks about his rise to entrepreneurship and his theories on the successful. David is one of the benefactors of our blog. We went offline with him to his farm and advised him from planting to harvesting potatoes. We haven’t come to the results yet but we celebrated his first signs of success today when we visited his farm. The young potatoes are now showing. I took a few photos of the plants with my phone. The resolution is not that good but the plants really look bright.

For the record, in the below photo, there are 3 shoots. Each shoot is capable of producing 3kgs of full grown potatoes. Thus the plant you are seeing right now can do 9kgs of potatoes. A pocket I guess. That’s good money. So if you have 100 plants with three shoots on each, that means you will be having approximately 1000kgs. Remember the blood that was shed during chimurenga. When I was at David’s farm, I saw a man who understood its meaning.
