An old saying goes – if you want to be rich, monetize your hobbies. The problem we may have is some of our hobbies even when monetized may never be worth that much. Hobbies can change and can be changed. Imagine how nice it is being paid for doing what you love. Work becomes play – and can this happen in Zimbabwe. I have read a lot of how to make money in Zimbabwe schemes online and a few talk about monetizing hobbies so I thought about filling that void.

Before you read this article right to the end, please note that it takes money to make more money. You are going to have to spend money first. And as I always tell you, if it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably not true. I have tried some of these fly by night money making schemes and have lost both money and time trying to pursue them. It brought me to reduce everything about making money into one simple statement. The simple question that you I feel you should ask yourself is, ‘When do I stop?’ I think when everything begins to be too exciting, stop. Quit! It’s not a rule of thumb but it has helped me avoid lose a lot of money to schemers. When a deal begins to sound too exciting and tingles your hair and you are saying, this is too good to be true – it could be the time to walk away. Or rope in someone to get a different point of view.

So back to scuba diving.

For the following few weeks I will be writing about an area which most Zimbabweans weren’t aware of. We have all head of the American dream; let’s talk about the Zimbabwean dream! Have you had the marketing byline making money living or making money doing what I love? Is that possible in Zimbabwe? Fortunately yes. The varied scuba diving opportunities in Zimbabwe and the rest of the world

When I first learnt of scuba diving in Zimbabwe, all I could think of was diving in swamps and dams to extract dead suicide bodies and the only job opportunity I saw was police sub aqua unit. Yes it is lucrative to be part of the elite force on a part time basis and always being on standby but is there more? Of course!

• Offshore oil rigs scuba opportunities – scuba divers are needed mainly for inspections, repairs, and maintenance which should be done regularly.
• Civil Engineering – Our Zimbabwean man made dams and bridges require constant monitoring and as such require divers. Repair activities include underwater welding and emergency construction work. Every structure whether disembodied by a body or water or not require constant monitoring and this could be an interesting niche for you.
• Research divers – are you a scientist? You aren’t spared. There is a place for you in the underwater world to really study what is going on, aquatic ecosystem amongst other things. Talk about doing your University project under water.
• Electricity and water – divers are needed to inspect water facilities and electricity generation facilities submerged under water. Repairs can then be carried out.
• Communication system. Right now fiber is everywhere. Divers are needed to lay up fiber cables under water. Think of the islands in Lake Kariba. Divers will be needed if they are to be connected with underwater fiber cable.
• Nuclear power plants – divers are needed in countires with nuclear power plants. These plants use river water for their processes and divers are needed regularly to inspect the inlet and outlet systems.
• Ship companies – companies which own vessels or sheepyards require divers. Their job will require scuba diving services to repair and maintenance or routine inspection of shipping piers, shipyards amongst other things. Ship propshafts and sea chests can only be repaired by divers.
• Police sub aqua unit – if you are a scuba diva, you can be employed as a standby personnel by the Zimbabwe police sub aqua unit. There are so many other opportunities which come with it.
