Setting up a creche in Zimbabwe – What to know before investing in an early childhood development project

This week we take an in-depth look at how to start an early childhood development centre. This is one of the low risk business models that one can start. The capital outlay required depends on the level one wants to pitch the business. You can either use your own house or rent a house.

The first step is to get a place suitable to run an early childhood development centre e.g. a house. Another important factor that determines the type of house is the number of classes you want to open. In this article we shall explain the standards that will kick start your business research and assess the viability of the project.

The Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes have levels. There is ECD A and ECD B. One should have both classes on his or her institute. ECD A or middle class comprises of children between the age of three and five years. The five year old kids are those who will start grade zero when they are still five years old and then turn six during the course of their first schooling year. This means, they start grade zero before their sixth birthday. ECD B on the other arm comprises of 6 year olds. So if a child in ECD A fails to get a place because of his age. He can then be put in ECD B and start school in the following year. This is quite a confusing concept and if you didn’t quite get it, you can send me an email and we can set up a meeting.

The other class that needs not much explanation is the nursery. As the name suggests this is for babies below the age of three including the ones still in dippers. So this is basically the business operational blueprint.

The next stage is very critical as it involves the learning curricular of the children. In Zimbabwe, there are seven areas that are looked at in developing children. There is the construction (e.g. puzzles), fantasy area, technology, home, clinic and musical area.

We are not done yet. To furnish the crèche, you can buy mini versions of the black plastic chairs mainly used in weddings in Zimbabwe. This with a combination of primary school tables will give the perfect learning environment for children.

You will need an outdoor play centre which include swings, see saw, slides, baby balls etc. There is also need to stock a lot of toys (including dolls for girls), building blocks etc. The other things needed like stationery are quite obvious but remember to budget for a lot of bond, crayons and mighty markers as they are used more often by both kids and there tutors.

For further details, visit the ECD Department at the Ministry of Education. There offices are located near the University of Zimbabwe Compass.
